Our History:

Protein Research was founded in 1968 by director Theodore Aarons, as Unilab Inc. to offer contract safety and quality testing to the food and cosmetics industries. By 1975 the company had evolved into Uni-Research to focus on developing the underlying technology for the world's first low-cost protein hydrolysates for human nutrition.Mr. Aarons realized the benefits and importance of nutrition and so in 1981 he joined with his son, Daniel to start Protein Research Associates using concepts and technology learned in the preceding six years. Daniel Aarons brought to the project his several years of entrepreneurial experience and a new view of the market. The new organization did consulting and formulation for established nutritional companies that are now among the leaders in the rapidly emerging Nutriceutical sector.

Recognizing the significant shortage of high quality, scientifically sophisticated nutritional supplement manufacturing capacity, Protein Research Associates set out to help fill that need. In 1983 they incorporated as Berkeley Nutritional Manufacturing while maintaining use of the Protein Research name. The company focused exclusively on private label manufacturing of ethical, high quality supplements and nutriceutials, serving a broad range of markets. Their offerings range from energy bar premixes to finished capsules, packaged and ready for the consumer.

In 1989 the company's pool of expertise expanded further when Robert Matheson joined the management team. Mr. Matheson brought years of expertise in state-of-the-art nutritional manufacturing technology gained through his work with companies such as Shaklee and Del Monte.

Robert Matheson gave an additional boost to an already successful group and Protein Research continued to grow. The company has doubled in size three times since '89. In 1997 the company built its current multimillion-dollar facility in Hayward, California where designed in expandability will meet our clients' needs well into the next decade.
