GMP refers to the Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) regulations that include oversight by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration under the authority of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. These regulations require that manufacturers, processors, and packagers of drugs, dietary supplements, medical devices, some food, and blood—take proactive steps to ensure that their products are safe, pure, and effective.

GMP regulations require a very specific set of rules for the manufacturing process. These procedures enable companies to minimize or eliminate instances of contamination, formulation errors, raw material mishaps, and product recalls. This, in turn, protects the consumer from purchasing a product that is not effective or is even dangerous. Firms that do not comply with GMP regulations face consequences including recall, seizure, fines, and jail time.
